Cpl. Frank Edward Dunaway, U.S.M.C.


Frank was born on June 4, 1921, in Mount Braddock, Pennsylvania to Hugh and Susan (Shipley) Dunaway. Frank enlisted in the Marine Corps on January 5, 1942, and after basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, he sailed for New Zealand and served at the Battle of Guadalcanal and the Consolidation of the Solomon Islands. Frank returned stateside for a period of time after contracting malaria. While stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, he earned the following special military qualifications:


Military Policeman

Machine Gun Crewman and Ammunition Technician.

He again returned overseas to participate in the Occupation of Japan from September to December, 1945. Frank was honorably discharged on January 4, 1946. On April 28, 1948, he married the former Marie I. Smarto and made his home in Connellsville. Frank passed away on March 23, 1991. He is buried in Saint Rita's Cemetery in Connellsville.
