He was awarded the “Honor Man of Company 486” by an Admiral in front of 5000 sailors. James then went to Treasure Island Naval Base in California where he boarded the USS Bull (DE-693) and was assigned to the Philippines to assist with cargo transportation for troops in combat. He was there till after the war ended as they had to assist with the withdrawal process.
